Duke: Bioethics in Global Surgery

The program was built to encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We learned about the different inequities that can and do occur in surgery based on race, gender, class, and geography. We were introduced to impossible, yet realistic, ethical dilemmas in medicine. We were pushed to find creative solutions to help as many people as possible with limited surgical supplies and a lack of specialized medical professionals. This program combined my interest in global issues and their international effects and my love of medicine and helping people.
