Belmont Hills Library
My love for libraries started with going to story times as a toddler. Ever since, the library has provided a space of silence, solitude, and peace. I loved being surrounded by hushed whispers and pages turning. I spent countless hours in my elementary and middle school libraries, before turning to my local library in high school.
I began as a volunteer at the Belmont Hills Library, checking books in and out, setting up small activities, and managing the front desk. Whether it was from getting advice from a patron, a book recommendation, the dewey decimal system, or parts of the library itself, every day I learn something new. Soon enough they offered me a job doing the same work I had been doing since my first day as a volunteer.
This job calls upon numerous skills, with a focus on creativity, communication, and logical thinking. The library gave me a space to express myself, and I began putting up displays that I cared about, hoping others would too. I began tossing around ideas for events, fundraisers, and activities. I eventually began running the official social media account to spread alerts, events, changes, and more about the library.
Volunteering and working at the library taught me a core lesson: there is always more to be seen, done, and learned.
