Trek
What is it?
The BuildOn trek program raises thousands of dollars each year to finance a trip to one of the disadvantaged countries to help build a school in a rural village. The communities promise to promote equal opportunity, having an equal number of men and women help build and attend the school.
Fundraising
I have raised over $5,000 for trek by being involved in schoolwide BuildOn fundraisers and events while hosting independent fundraisers by partnering with local restaurants, promoting their businesses in exchange for donating a portion of their profit from the night.
Building the school
In Mzuzu, Malawi, I learned to use various tools and spent my time digging trenches, mixing concrete, and carrying materials to and from the worksite. The process of building the school was challenging, but I am so proud of all that I had helped accomplish.
Cultural Immersion
Trek offers full cultural immersion in another community. We learned the Mzuzu way of life through activities like gender-based discussions and weaving straw mats, playing with the village children, and learning a new language. It was eye opening to see how others around the world live and experience it for myself through complete cultural immersion.
